the FIREstarter

 My body

 a wave

 My heart

 Blaze up this place

 Yes

 I am a fire starter

 Water has no shape

My steps are in a race

 One mission

 Give it all I got

 I seize the now

 I lose to find myself

 I cut the air

 I make it burn

 I’m free

 I’m beauty

 I am bird

 Look at me

 That’s what you are

 We are ONE

 Yes

 I am

 Your fire starter

 Gravity can’t hold me down

 I’m THE rocket

 I explode into a star

 I dare my system

 I break the mould

 I am gold

 I’m THE fire starter

 I DANCE I DARE I AM

In this world On the Roof Dance Company and Amizero Kompagnie production

For me dance is synonym to life itself, the freedom to be, to exist, to love, to feel.

Dance is the ultimate way to abandon yourself to the true meaning of living.

Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing. And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb. And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance, was saying Khalil Gibran Lebanese-American artist, poet, and writer.

WESLEY RUZIBIZA is a Unicorn. He is one of Rwanda’s leading dancers and choreographers. Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1980, Wesley began studying contemporary dance in 2000 at the University of Rwanda. He trained in African contemporary dance techniques with Arts Azimuts, part of the University Centre for Arts & Drama. His professional training continued both nationally and abroad, including through artists’ exchanges and Germaine Acogny’s renowned Ecole des Sables in Dakar, Senegal. He is a 2010 Sundance Institute Theatre Lab on Manda alumn. Wesley’s choreographic pieces have been showcased at major cultural events, such as the opening of the Pan-African Festival of Dance (FESPAD), Rwanda’s Heroes’ Day, Genocide Commemoration, and the Under 20 African Soccer Cup. Wesley holds a B.A. in Dance in Traditional and Contemporary African Style from Ecole de Sables. Wesley has also worked with an international multicultural project for children, The Longest Story in the World, touring in countries including Romania, the UK, and Bangladesh. Wesley was selected for a choreographic training in Ouagadougou and Paris. This led to the creation of the first professional contemporary dance group in Rwanda, Amizero Kompagnie. Amizero Kompagnie’s play Baho won the Silver Medal for Rwanda at the Sixth Annual Jeux de la Francophonie in Lebanon. Amizero Kompagnie founded in 2012 "East African Nights of Tolerance" EANT, the first contemporary dance festival in Rwanda.

Creating Performing Platforms

All around us, since ever, there are people who are daring to dare. There are the people who are doing the extraordinary inspiring us with their passion.  They are the fire starters among us, the lights on the hill enticing us to the unexplored new and exciting places of our souls, calling us to search deeper within and find more and more reasons to celebrate this journey we take together called life. Across Rwanda, amazing people are in a life mission to create what is missing: the professional performing platforms. They MAKE IT HAPPEN! They open the doors for the others to follow their passion, to dream on and shine for all. DANCE DANCE DANCE! Wesley Ruzibiza believes in the power of dance and his drive made possible a dance festival, that is more than a showcase of artistic performances, it's a PLATFORM. A platform means a raised structure or orbiting satellite from which rockets may be launched. And this is what EANT Contemporary Dance Festival is for the dance and performing creativity in the East African Region.

THE EAST AFRICAN NIGHTS OF Tolerance

Rwanda's First Contemporary Dance Festival aims to bring together East African artists into a sincere conversation about peace and conflict in the region, and also to share and open new possibilities through contemporary dance, a newly explored artistic expression in Rwanda. Every year, the festival reveals and runs dance performances from the region and beyond those borders, seminars, conferences and dance workshops for kids, professional dancers and amateurs. The word DANCE comes from Sanskrit and means ‘desire to live'. The festival's goal is to prove it is possible to find better ways while talking with our bodies, the "chambres de resonance" of our souls, to heal unnecessary tensions and unleash the natural human desire to celebrate life together

what is CONTEMPORARY DANCE?

Contemporary dance is a popular form of art that developed during the middle of the twentieth century. It has since become one of the leading performance genres for formally trained dancers around the world. It is especially popular in the USA and Western Europe. Although it is originally informed by and borrows from classical, modern and jazz styles, it incorporates elements from many styles of dance. Due to its popularity amongst trained dancers and because of some overlap in movement type, it is often considered to be closely related to modern dance, ballet and other classical concert dance styles. Contemporary dance utilizes both the strong and controlled legwork of ballet and modern dance's stress on the torso. It also employs contact-release, floor work, fall and recovery, and the improvisation characteristic of modern dance. Unpredictable changes in rhythm, speed, and direction are hallmarks of contemporary dance. It sometimes incorporates elements of non-western dance cultures including African dance including bent knees, or movements from the Japanese contemporary dance Butoh. In Rwanda, dance is an important part of the national culture. Traditional ballets groups such as Nganzo Ingari regularly performs sold out concerts around the world. Watch Intore dancers. But other forms of dance are on the rise, from the contemporary style Wesley teaches, to jazz, samba and more.

Nobody cares if you can't dance well.

Just get up and dance.

Great dancers are great

because of their passion.
